Profile: Omar & the Marvellous Coffee Bird, Gardenvale

This cafe and roaster’s name is based on a Yemeni legend: a sheik named Omar was bordering on starvation after being exiled. As he trailed through the desert, he noticed a bird chomping on coffee beans.

After failing to ingest the beans, Omar decided to boil them. He discovered a revitalising brown concoction, similar to what we know now as coffee. From all of us Omar, thank you.

As well as brewing coffee, owners Dean Atkins and Andy Gelman have brewed themselves a bromance – they’ve worked together for 10 years and counting. Their beans are behind the coffee at Walk Don’t RunMerchant’s Guild and Einstein’s 251.

It’s easy to mistake Omar’s for a factory. The 48-seat space has an industrial fit-out (designed by March Studio). It’s made up of metal structures and wooden counters holding grinders that never seem to stop growling.

Coffee comes any way you want it: in a coffee dripper (ideal for sharing), as an affogato or as your regular latte or espresso. All of Omar’s coffee blends are available for purchase.

The refined vibe also extends to the menu, which includes mushrooms on sourdough with labneh and Fontina cheese; and a pork-belly and apple-slaw roll.
