The brand releases sportswear up to a size 3XL.
2017 is proving to be the year of change. Nike just unveiled its plus size range for women, making it the first major commercial athletic apparel brand to release a plus size collection.
At the moment the range is available online, but not in physical Australian stores.
The brand has created new styles in an array of colours, including tank tops, jackets, leggings and more. Nike has also introduced sports bras up to a size 38E. Because let’s face it– it’s near impossible to work out without having the girls secured.
Nike’s vice president of women’s training apparel, Helen Boucher, says “strong is the keyword for us, size doesn’t matter.”
“When we design for plus size, we aren’t just proportionately making our products larger. That doesn’t work because as we know, everyone’s weight distribution is different.”
While not everyone is a fan of the cuts and fits of particular styles, many are welcoming the new range.
Nike’s recent campaign is based around equality, stating ‘the days where we have to add ‘female’ before ‘athlete’ are over. She is an athlete, period. And having helped fuel this cultural shift, we celebrate these athletes’ diversity, from ethnicity to body shape’.
However, we are yet to see a plus size line for men. The Nike website currently hosts two ‘extended size’ men’s t-shirts. We find it interesting (and somewhat confusing) how women’s clothes are referred to as ‘plus size’ and men’s, ‘extended’.
We’re holding out for the men’s line, and maybe then, the brand will fulfil its hopes of true equality. It’s on the right track, that’s for sure.
