Splurging at Southland is about to get a whole lot easier.

100 years ago, the idea of Southland railway station arose. Now, that idea it being fulfilled, with construction beginning this week.

State Transport Minister Jacinta Allan predicts the new station will assist about 4000 passengers a day.

Southland railway station “will boost public transport access to the shopping centre with a safer, more direct route while providing an alternative to neighbouring Highett and Cheltenham stations,” Ms Allan said.

The $21 million project will include direct access to Southland Shopping Centre, bathrooms, ramps and stair access to both platforms.

Basic works on the project were completed earlier this year. Track drainage was installed, so were cabling works and the tracks have been raised.

An underpass connecting the two future platforms is the next step in construction.

Southland railway station will be completed by the end of 2017, adding another stop on the Frankston line.
